Whishper

About Whishper

Whishper is the 3rd iteration and improvement on the formerly known as Web-Whisper. It is a web application that allows you to transcribe audio files, and translate them to different languages. Also, it comes with a subtitle editor that allows you to edit the transcription and the translation.

The name Whishper comes from the combination of the words Whisper and Wish. The first one because it is a transcription tool, and the second one because it is a tool that I wanted to have for a long time.

Motivation

I have been working on this project for quite some time. It started as a simple transcription tool, but it has evolved into something more. I have been using it for a long time, and I have been improving it as I needed new features.

When the whisper model first came out, I was amazed by the accuracy of the transcription. I wanted to use it, and my father wanted to use it too. But he didn’t want to use the command line. So I decided to build a web interface for it. Now, my father can generate subtitles in his native language for videos that he couldn’t understand before.

Apart from that, I just find joy in building things, so there’s no other motivation behind it. I just wanted to build something useful, and share with others.

The whishper logo is a cloud blowing the “wind”. It is a reference to the whisper model, and also to the fact that it is a web application. As a more abstract meaning, it is a reference to when you blow the candles on your birthday cake, and you make a wish.

License

Whishper is licensed under the AGPL License. This means that you can use it for free, and you can modify it as you want. However, if you modify it, you need to share the source code with the same license.

Why GitHub?

I used to host the source code on GitLab, but I decided to move it to GitHub. The main reason is that I wanted to use GitHub Actions to build and deploy the docker image. I am looking for ways to get away from GitHub as much as possible, but for now, I will keep using it for this project.
